Legless lizard, Other new species discovered

Fact 1: This legless repitle was recently discovered in central Brazil’s Cerrado.

Fact 2: This lizard’s lack of legs and sharply pointed snout help itg swim within the sandy soils.

Fact 3: This lizard, part of a separate evolutionary line from snakes, is one 14 species believed new to science discovered on a four-week expedition to a 1.77-million-acre protected area in the Cerrado.

Summary: I learned scientists are finding new species everyday in the world. I think it is cool that we are finding because we can be more aware of dangerous or nondangerous species. It looks exactly like a snake but evidently the DNA doesn’t.

Neanderthals Ate Their Veggies, Tooth Study Shows

fact#1: widely assumed that Neanderthals ate more than just meat.

fact#2: microfossils of plant material were found in a Neanderthal teeth.

fact#3: It might have been that just that certain Neanderthal ate plants.

In Iraq, the first direct evidence that Neanderthals ate more than just meat was discovered. The lead study author, Amanda Henry, said that the Neanderthal was estimated to have teeth 50,000 years old. I thought it was really strange that people found things in the teeth for how old the skull was. It was under the earth, though, so it was preserved well and wasn’t bothered.

Asian vultures Close to Extinction

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/bigphotos/91751586.html

fact #1: Long-biller vulture are down by 97% since early 1990’s.
fact#2: The drug given to livestock has poisoned Vultures.
fact#3: Will be dead within the decade.

It is sad to see how drugs given to animals are not specifically cared for, and watched so no other animal can get it if it is harmful to them. People need to tae better care of animals and containing the drug so no other animal can be harmed.

Neanderthals Had Big Mouths, Gaped Widely

FACT #1: New research has shown that Neanderthals had mouths that they could open really wide.
FACT #2: The team that found this out was not able to measure exactly how wide Neanderthals could open their mouths.
FACT #3: Yoel Rak and William Hylander are the professors from Duke University that figured this out.
WHAT I LEARNED: They say that this could be an adaptation because of the large food that Neanderthals ate. Neanderthals ate their veggies.
